SMOONSTYLE

One of the most asked questions is how I take care of my hair.

Normally I wash them every second day. Sometimes I manage to squeeze in an extra day of not washing them, but then I use a dry shampoo, especially if I have to leave the house.

I am not the biggest fan of dry shampoos. I kind of like the clean feeling of freshly washed hair. Dry shampoo leaves a sticky film on the hair. It is great for tours when showers are missing. When you want volume in your hair for certain up do's it is great to give the hair structure. I however don't like that feeling and the fact that it makes the hair look dull. For me it is an emergency product, but not a favorite.

Besides shampoo I always use a conditioner and almost always a hair mask or hair treatment and a hair oil to protect the hair from any heating tools and frizzly bear look. Where I live there is a lot of limestone in the water and I need condition it more than when I would wash it with water that is clean of limestone.

Here are my current favorite hair food products:

Redken Fresh Curls Shampoo
My current shampoo and a long time favorite. This is a highly concentrated shampoo (it must have done well in school). A little goes a long way. The scent is divine. It leaves my hair super clean, without making it scrunchy. It feels volumized without feeling dirty like some volumizing shampoos tend to do. The coconut oil really conditions without making it greasy. It's perfect.

Organix Macadamia Oil Conditioner
A conditioner that I used last year and totally forgot about. However, we don't have this brand in Germany and the Netherlands. I ordered mine via amazon.de and it was shipped from the UK. I paid way more for it than when I got it while I was in the US. It is not such an expensive conditioner. It does the job really well. I sometimes also just use this after I washed my hair and skip the hair mask. I do that whenever I am lazy and when my hair is in a good shape.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Keratin Intensive Treatment
An expensive hair product, but worth the money. It smoothes down my hair again without leaving a nasty film on my hair. My hair has become stronger and smoother. Once this is empty, I will first use up  other hair products and then go back to it in case I cannot find any good replacement for it.

Kerastase Elixir Ultime Oil
I always use this before I blow dry my hair as a heat protectant and once again after to take the frizziness out.

I am aware that all these products contain silicons, but that is what makes my hair shiny, soft and strong. There have been very few silicon free hair products that I liked and that managed to control my hair.

Let me know your current hair care routine in the comments. I am curious how you all maintain your manes.

So exciting!! Our official DVD statement:

EPICA's Retrospect trailer revealed.

On the 23rd March 2013 the Dutch symphonic metal band EPICA celebrated their 10th Anniversary with a special concert dubbed Retrospect. During this evening the band was accompanied by the seventy piece Extended Reményi Ede Chamber Orchestra and the Miskolc National Theatre Choir, playing an unforgettable 3-hours best-of set.

Ten high-definition cameras captured this very special sold-out show while EPICA played in front of nearly five thousand ecstatic fans. In addition to a collection of the band's biggest hits from across the spectrum of their entire catalog, this once-in-a-lifetime spectacular also featured the live debut of "Twin Flames" and the previously unreleased "Retrospect", covers of classics by Vivaldi, Pergolesi, and Oscar-winning film composer John Williams, two guest collaborations with the venerable Floor Jansen (NIGHTWISH, REVAMP), and a very special performance of their breakthrough single "Quietus" with founding members Jeroen Simons, Ad Sluijter and Yves Huts.

The trailer of the upcoming Epica Retrospect release has been revealed. You can view the trailer on our YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTy5yjccZzE

Epica’s guitar player Mark Jansen comments on the trailer: Retrospect was both our 10th anniversary party and a highlight of our career. The trailer shows it all: our loyal fans, the orchestra and choir from Hungary, an energetic band! When I watch the trailer my thoughts go back to this special day and the great team-spirit of everyone involved in this project!“

Retrospect will be released as a deluxe hardcover book with 36 pages, both as a 2DVD/3CD and 2Blu-ray/3CD version, on the 8th November through Nuclear Blast.

You can pre-order signed copies or exclusive bundles here: Buy Retrospect

A current nail trend for this upcoming autumn is black red nails. One of the true classics is Rouge Noir from Chanel. Luckily this is an easy dupable color.

Before spending the money, I started to rearrange my collection for autumn and winter. I came across this beautiful Manhattan nail polish. Manhattan saved me a trip to the shops and quite some euros.

Such a lovely, classy color for the changing season.

You are probably thinking, who would want to wear pink eyeshadow? I have been wearing pink eyeshadow since the beginning days of EPICA, onstage and in private. It really makes my blue eyes pop. The trick is to make sure that you have to conceal any redness in your face. The right concealer is key. Another tip is to line your waterline with a skin colored pencil.

I like to wear pink eyeshadows in the crease, combined with a lighter eyeshadow and a flicked eyeliner.  The black of the eyeliner also creates a barrier that prevents your eyes from looking like you've cried or had an allergic reaction.

Pink eyeshadow is fun and makes blue and green eyes pop out in the good sense. A little tip: If you don't own any pink eyeshadow you can also use a pink blush of your choice.

Products used for this look:
  • Bourjois Healthy Mix Foundation 51 and 52
  • Urban Decay Naked Virgin (inner corner highlight) Sin (on the lid)
  • MAC Supercontinental as blush and crease color
  • Black eyeliner
  • Diorama 066 lipstick
  • Maybelline Falsies mascara
  • Catrice 010 eyebrow pencil
  • Manhattan clearface powder 77 Natural

Today I want to share with you one of my favorite Mexican appetizers. Every time I am in Mexico, I eat 'Pico de Gallo Salsa' until I drop. They often offer it as a free starter in many restaurants. It is absolutely delicious! I decided to bring Mexico to Germany and have my own little feast. It is super easy to make and super healthy.

This recipe is not my own, but taken from Laura in the Kitchen. She has some amazing cooking videos and is fun to watch.

I also baked her tortilla chips with my own seasoning mixture existing out of black pepper, pul biber, black pepper, Alnatura fruity salt mixture and some garlic powder.

I tell you, this was gone in 3 minutes. It's absolute soul food that made our day.

Go ahead and try a bite. You won't regret it!

A current hair trend is the fishtail braid. I've actually never tried it, because it looked too complicated. Aside from curling my hair, I cannot do much. I can't even do the french braid.

Well I tell you that it is much easier than it looks, however it does need some practice. I've only mastered the side fishtail braid so far. I find that it easier because I can see what I am doing.

Here is a YouTube tutorial that is amazing and helped me create the fishtail braid that you see on the pictures.

  • Everyday Fishtail Braid

Has any of you mastered the technique?

During traveling and sometimes my clumsiness, I've broken or dropped powder make up. Eyeshadows, blushes and recently my Mary-Lou Manizer highlighter. In the past I often threw them away or tried to press them back in place. MLM was lying in a corner for a long time. I didn't want to throw it away, but pressing a large powder is more difficult than a smaller eyeshadow. You can use coins and a tissue to fix eyeshadows.

YouTube guru Michelle Phan, posted a video on how to fix broken powder make up. In her video she is fixing a powder blush. I tried her technique with my MLM and it worked! Thanks Michelle!

Here you can find the video: Fix Broken Powder
She also has a great one for: Broken Lipstick
I tried to fix two lipsticks, I succeeded with one. I will have to try another time.

Here's my try at fixing MLM and I love the result! I can continue using it without highlighting my whole room and beauty desk. Plus I won't look like Tinkerbell in the end.

It did smell a bit like alcohol in the beginning, but that has faded totally now.

Closed and broken inside. I forgot to take a picture of the broken state. It was completely shattered.
Some alcohol is needed. DO NOT DRINK THIS! I got mine at the pharmacy, not at the supermarket.
Add some alcohol in the cup and pour it over the broken product. Let it sink in and mix with a spatula.
Smooth out with a spoon. I added some more alcohol.
Finished smoothing the surface.
Let it dry overnight.
Ready to use again!

Summer is stepping aside for autumn and my belly needs something warmer. My maxi dresses have served me well during my pregnancy, but had to make way for oversized jumpers and cardigans.

This super cozy sweater that I am wearing is from C&A (last year). I also own one in black.

Are you also looking forward to autumn? What do you like most about autumn?

I recently posted a 'Panna Cotta' picture on Instagram and lot's of you asked for a recipe. It is super easy to make and you don't need a lot of ingredients and no fancy kitchen tools. What I love about it, is that you can make so many different variations.

This how I've made 4 portions:
  • 2 packages of 250 ml unwhipped cream.
  • 40 gram of Xucker  (a sugar alternative).
  • 1-2 vanilla sticks.
  • 4 sheets of gelatin.
  • Topping of your choice, I chose blue berries. Fresh fruit is in my opinion better because this is already a very high calorie dessert.

  1. Warm up the unwhipped cream until it is almost boiling.
  2. Put the gelatin sheets in some water to soften them.
  3. Cut the vanilla sticks open and add the black filling.
  4. Stir, stir, stir.
  5. Add the gelatin.
  6. Stir some more.
  7. Put the panna cotta cream in what ever cups/glasses of your choice.
  8. Let it cool down for about 4 to 5 hours in the fridge.

So, you can skip the sugar, put only one vanilla stick in there. It all depends on how you like it. If you prepare the panna cotta the evening before, it will be even tastier than if you prepare it fresh. The vanilla has really sunken in and the gelatin has totally hardened.

Let me know how your Panna Cotta has turned out and please post a picture on Twitter and Instagram with #smoonstyle. Looking forward to seeing your versions!

Eet smakelijk!

Bronzer has always been a product that I skipped in my make up routine. I thought that fair skinned can't really rock bronzer, but I was wrong! I use bronzer for several things now. For instance: my eyebrows, my crease, as a blush or if I want to warm up my skin.

I only own two bronzers and both are miniatures, Laura Mercier's Dune Bronzer and Nars Laguna bronzer. Both work great for my brows, but LM's has a nicer consistency. Nars' is very dusty, and I don't know if that is because it is a sample?

Products used for this look
  • Diorskin Forever 020
  • Kryolan Dual Finish Powder W3/W4
  • MAC NC20 studio finish concealer
  • MAC Paintpot Quite Natural
  • MAC Mulch eyeshadow
  • Black eyeshadow
  • Bobbi Brown Longwear Gel Liner in Sepia Ink
  • Maybelline False Lash Mascara Waterproof black
  • Nars and Laura Mercier bronzers on the cheeks and face
  • Revlon Colorburst Soft Nude as a base and MAC Posh Tone on top
